Downsizing can get pretty expensive-- redoing your house so that it can be sold, buying new furniture for your new place, equipping your new place with all the comfortable accessories you have grown to consider vital, and moving.
Although you might avoid some of these costs by having a low-maintenance lifestyle, moving is the one cost that you can’t avoid. Here are three ways to cut down on spending when planning your downsize and move:
1. Compare quotes to ensure you get what you need: Get quotes from at least 2-4 moving companies. Moving companies offer many different services, so it is important to know what you are getting quoted for when you are researching moving companies. Some companies offer packing services, some companies will pick up from your bedroom and deliver right to your new bedroom, while others will pick up and drop off at curbside. Some companies will charge you based on how big of a crew they think you need—for your typical 4-5 bedroom house, a 4-man crew should suffice.
Be aware that for all in-state moves, you will be charged a fixed rate for travel time regardless of whether your move is during rush hour or not. All these things reflect in the quote that you receive, so be sure to check what all is being included and what is not.
2. Downsize before you get your quote. The less you move, the less you pay. Cut down on how much you are moving!
Everyone struggles emotionally to let go of prized treasures, so rather than throwing stuff out, why not hold a moving sale or sell online using through websites like Craigslist. Or if you want to keep your things in the family, ship your treasures to your children and grandchildren. Either way, you’ll end up losing less, and might even end up making some money!
3. Pack smart! Packing yourself has perks. You can save by visiting restaurants, grocery stores, or retail stores for extra boxes. These boxes are strong and usually free!
Also, rather than spending on packing supplies like bubble wrap, pad your items with household linens and clothes. Lastly, take apart furniture yourself and ahead of time. Some moving companies charge extra to take apart furniture items like table, beds, and desks. You can save by disassembling them yourself. Packing yourself means you have control over what you spend and where!
Most importantly, be organized. Anything that will save you time, will save you money!
